Tanghalang Pilipino (TP) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines team up with ABS-CBN’s streaming app iWant in bringing six (6) previously-staged  TP productions online through ‘Pantawid ng Tanghalan’, a fund-raising activity that seeks to sustain the company’s commitment in bringing artistically-excellent and socially-relevant productions to the public. This activity comes from the heels of TP’s online initiative, ‘PansamanTANGHALAN’, which was launched last April.

“Tanghalang Pilipino’s commitment to constantly engage our audiences, especially now that we’re in the midst of the pandemic, gave birth to our ‘PansamanTanghalan”. However, we want to elevate the audience’s experience and thankfully, iWant has agreed to partner with us in making our shows more accessible to the public.” says TP Artistic Director Nanding Josef. “This partnership fortifies a strong future for the entire performing arts industry in the digital landscape. And we’re so glad that TP is at the forefront of that movement.”

The six productions to be featured include the recently-staged ethno-epic musical, Lam-Ang; the steampunk musical Mabining Mandirigma; celebrated Filipino translation of Shakespeare classics Coriolano, Pangarap sa Isang Gabi ng Gitnang Tag-Araw , and Der Kaufmann;  and the hit children’s musical Sandosenang Sapatos.

Coming from a successful run last December 2019 and originally slated as TP’s 34th Season opening production, Lam-Ang, An Ethno-Epic Musical returns, albeit online, to tell the story of the oldest epic hero in Luzon. With book and lyrics by Eljay Castro Deldoc, music by Jen Darlene Torres, and directed by Marco Viaña and Fitz Edward Bitana, the musical stars JC Santos in the title role, together with Anna Luna, Tex Ordonez-De Leon, and some of the most promising young theater actors in the country today.

Mabining Mandirigma, a steampunk musical by Dr. Nicanor Tiongson and Joed Balsamo, and directed by CCP Vice President and Artistic Director Chris Millado, has already enjoyed four successful restaging, since it premiered in 2016. The musical chronicles the legal and diplomatic heroism of the sublime paralytic, Apolinario Mabini, played brilliantly by Ms. Monique Wilson. A winner of astounding twelve (12) Gawad Buhay! Awards, including Outstanding Musical, Mabining Mandirigma was hailed by inquirer.net as ‘One of the Best Filipino Musicals in recent years’. Snippets of the show are already available on the Tanghalang Pilipino Youtube channel.

A story about a legendary Roman soldier turned into a tyrannical leader, Coriolano effectively displays how personal and selfish ambition can lead to one’s ultimate downfall. Translated by Guelan Varela - Luarca and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Carlos Siguion-Reyna, the play stars Marco Viaña as Coriolano, together with Frances Makil-Ignacio and Sherry Lara alternating as his strong-willed mother, Volumnia. Coriolano had its premiere in January 2019 at the CCP Little Theater.

Also directed by Siguion-Reyna, Pangarap sa Isang Gabi ng Gitnang Tag-araw, National Artist for Literature and Theater Rolando Tinio’s translation of Shakespeare’s famous comedy ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, tells the story of multiple characters as they traverse a complicated web of romance, all set in a grandiose mystery of Athens. Pangarap also boasts of a powerhouse cast, which includes Audie Gemora, former TP Associate Artistic Director Liesl Batucan, Jackielou Blanco, Teroy Guzman, Rafa Siguion-Reyna, Richard Cunanan, Randy Villarama, Sky Labastilla, together with the Tanghalang Pilipino Actors Company. The show was staged in September 2016.

Der Kaufmann, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice, relives the horror of the holocaust, with the Nazis directing the Jewish “actors”, underscoring the dehumanizing effect of racism and intolerance. Adapted for stage by Rody Vera, with Tuxqs Rutaquio co-directing, Der Kaufmann features the Tanghalang Pilipino Actors Company. The most awarded play during the 2014 Gawad Buhay! Awards, Der Kaufmann brought home seven (7) awards, including Outstanding Translation or Adaptation and Outstanding Ensemble for a Play or Musical.

A musical based on the Palanca Award-winning children’s book, Sandosenang Sapatos tells a powerful story of a father’s selfless love to his differently-abled daughter. Adapted for stage by Layeta Bucoy, with music by Jed Balsamo and Noel Cabangon, and direction by Tuxqs Rutaquio, Sandosenang Sapatos has effectively woven the magic brought about by wheelchair-bound Susie’s fantasy and the grim realities that she lives in. The musical garnered nominations from the 2014 Gawad Buhay! Awards, including one for Outstanding Children’s Production. Songs from the musical are also available on Spotify. The book of Sandosenang Sapatos is now a Hiyas Classic, and its premium edition is now available for purchase through OMF Publishing.

The shows mentioned will be streamed on iWant from June 12 to July 12.

JoKoy, one of today’s premier comedians, announced that his third Netflix special, “In His Elements,” starts streaming on June 12, which also marks the annual celebration Philippine Independence Day.

On his Instagram® account, JoKoy shared, “This is a very special moment for me. This is that one special where I said I need to go back home to the Philippines; I need to show people where my mom is from. I had this crazy idea of bringing a bunch of my friends that were Filipino that live in America that never have been back to the Philippines. Let us show them how beautiful the country is, let us show them how beautiful the people are.”

According to one of the top entertainment websites, Deadline Hollywood, “JoKoy’s new Netflix special will celebrate his heritage as he cracks wise about life as a Filipino-American while highlighting the culture of Manila. Koy uses this opportunity to shine a light on other Filipino-American performers by welcoming to the stage famed breakdancer Ronnie, Grammy-winning producer !llmind, singer/songwriter Inigo Pascual, and comedians Andrew Lopez, Joey Guila, and Andrew Orolfo.”

Pascual, who joins JoKoy in “In His Elements,” says that “Kuya Jo Koy treats everyone like family. He makes sure everyone is having an amazing time and that everyone is included. I love how he makes sure to include his Filipino roots in whatever he does, and it was an honor to be a part of this Netflix production, the first to be shot in the Philippines.”

Fans worldwide will be in for a treat as JoKoy performs on a stage and connects with his people who could relate with his jokes and who have experienced similar hilarious incidents with their parents, the way JoKoy has funny exchanges with his Filipina mother, Josie.

JoKoy proudly declares, “Everything about this show is Filipino - the camera men, the audience, the venue owners- we need to embrace our culture, have a good time & I can’t wait for the world to see it. So proud of this one & my mom is going to be even more proud, because I finally brought Netflix to the Philippines.”

JoKoy recently took part in TFC’s “Heroes Without Capes” campaign honoring the front liners. He was joined by other Filipino American icons like Grammy award winning H.E.R., Apl.de.ap from the multi-platinum group, Black Eyed Peas, and Billboard chart-topping Saweetie. 05/19/2020 (TV Series Craze)

Tanghalang Pilipino, the resident theater company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, has adapted new means to create platforms for our artistic endeavors at a time when mass gatherings are restricted. PangsamanTanghalan, Tanghalang Pilipino’s online Youtube channel, was made to provide our audience with an alternative space for our shows while still under quarantine. PangsamanTanghalan is proving itself successful so far and is moving towards our intended goal for this campaign.

We want our content made available for our audience to enjoy and we initiated this by producing and publishing our first monovlog series. Lolo Doc, a monovlog written by Layeta Bucoy, encapsulates the situation our pandemic frontliners face at the moment through the eyes of an ageing doctor. Lolo Doc was played by none other than our very own artistic director, Fernando "Nanding" Josef. We see the attention our Lolo Doc has gathered as an indicator of PangsamanTanghalan’s potential.

We now see this potential currently setting future projects in motion. This has resulted to a collaboration between our organization and one of Philippine cinema’s greatest performers. Lola Doc, the much-awaited sequel to Lolo Doc, will be portrayed by Nora Aunor, inarguably the brightest star that Philippine showbiz has seen. Lola Doc will be followed by more performances to be announced in the near future.

The pandemic has limited our means but certainly not our creative spirit. We want our audience to know that we are still here to keep theater thriving even under quarantine. By helping us through your channels, word of PangsamanTanghalan will reach more people. 05/19/2020 (TV Series Craze)

Millions of Filipinos will lose their source of news and entertainment when ABS-CBN is ordered to go off-air on TV and radio tonight (5 May 2020) when people need crucial and timely information as the nation deals with the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is in compliance with the cease and desist order issued by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) today that prohibits ABS-CBN from continuing its broadcast operations effective immediately.

Despite Senate Resolution No. 40, the House of Representatives' committee on legislative franchises' letter, the guidance of the Department of Justice, and the sworn statement of NTC Commissioner General Gamaliel Cordoba, the NTC did not grant ABS-CBN a provisional authority to operate while its franchise remains pending in Congress.

In an interview with DZMM last week, House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano even gave an assurance that there is no move to shut down the network.

ABS-CBN has been providing comprehensive news coverage on the public health crisis and working with local governments and the private sector in providing food and basic goods for those in need through its "Pantawid ng Pag-ibig" campaign. To date, it has delivered over P300 million worth of goods for the benefit of over 600,000 families affected by the enhanced community quarantine.

We trust that the government will decide on our franchise with the best interest of the Filipino people in mind, recognizing ABS-CBN's role and efforts in providing the latest news and information during these challenging times.

ABS-CBN remains committed to being in the service of the Filipino and we will find ways to continue providing meaningful service to them. 05/06/2020 (TV Series Craze)
